With ever growing populations, urbanisation, increasing wealth, water intensive agriculture and biofuel production, water demand is increasing steadily. In fact, according to the United Nations, water demand will outstrip availability by 40% by 2030. With over 5 billion people expected to be living in cities by 2025, increased urbanisation is also depleting local groundwater resources. Approximately two-thirds of the world’s population, or over 4.6 billion people will encounter water stressed conditions in the next decade.
